The Plantations
Plantations Road, which runs parallel to the Coastal Highway, is where you will find the entrances to The Plantations and Plantations East. They are gated communities that feature membership-optional amenities: a clubhouse with a fitness center, an outdoor swimming pool, and both indoor and outdoor tennis. The Plantations Complex is so very close to the Lewes and Rehoboth beaches and the State Parks. Shopping of all kinds is nearby, the movie theatre is just down the street, public and private golf courses are all around, dining from plain to fancy can easily be found, and the Cape Henlopen Schools are just a short distance away, which can make these neighborhoods an ideal location for your vacation retreat or for a year-round residence.
The Plantations is the original development, and it is found west of Plantations Road where the pool and tennis courts are located. Construction on the first condominiums was started in the early 1980’s with additional phases being built over the years to total about 200 units. Additionally, there are approximately 30 single-family home sites in this community. All of the residential buildings and homes are nicely blended with the landscape and are situated around ponds, sprawling open lands or wooded backdrops. There are one- and two-story condos, and all either have assigned parking and/or a garage. Condo prices are generally in the low- to mid-$200k range with 2009’s median price at $247,500. Age and size have dictated the home prices, with sale prices between $350k to $425k.
Plantations East, with its entrance to the east of Plantations Road, is a beautifully-designed residential planned community that includes single-family detached homes, duplexes, villas, courtyard homes, townhouses and condominiums. Construction began in the early 1990’s in Plantations East, and the neighborhood now includes almost 400 residential dwelling. With a beautiful lake anchored in the center of the community, the premier residential sites afford stunning water views. The 2009 median price for detached single-family homes was just under $350,000, with the duplex homes being comparable to that price, while the other property types ranged from $170k to $260k, with the median sales price in 2009 at $234,500.
